HILARY CAMPBELL
COMPOSITION
"Hilary Campbell’s Ave Maria, commissioned by the Consort in 2012 and correspondingly well suited to them, was beautifully atmospheric and especially effective" Carol Main, The Scotsman
Hilary's music has been performed in the US, Australia and around Europe, by professional and amateur ensembles alike, including: BBC Singers; Polish National Chamber Choir; Vilnius Municipal Choir; The Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge; Royal Academy of Music Chamber Choir; Ebor Singers; Leeds Cathedral Choir; Cheltenham Bach Choir; Harvard Memorial Choir; Wells Cathedral Choir; BBC Symphony Chorus (workshop); Culemborg Chapel Choir; National Youth Choir of Great Britain; Choral Scholars of St Martin in the Fields; Blossom Street; King William Singers; Trinity College of Music Chamber Choir; Birmingham Conservatoire Chamber Choir; Illumination; Music Makers of London; Oxbridge Singers. Recent performances include those at venues including Neresheim Abbey, St Johns, Smith Square, Royal Palace in Madrid, St Martin in the Fields, York Minster, Leeds Cathedral, Old Royal Naval College, Trinity College Cambridge and Wells Cathedral.
In 2008, Hilary became Composer in Residence for the Ebor Singers, having won their inaugural competition for composers. She was also the winner of the Shipley Arts Festival Composer Award 2009, the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society Choral Composition Prize 2009, the Philip Bates Prize for Young Composers in 2004, and in 2006 was a finalist in the National Youth Choir Composition Competition. She was awarded second place in the Musica Sacra International Competition for Composers 2010, which resulted in performances and broadcasts of her work in Poland and Lithuania by professional ensembles; in 2011, Stephen Layton conducted the Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge in its UK premiere. Her music has been workshopped by both the BBC Symphony Chorus and BBC Singers. Selected works are published by Shorter House, Boreas and JeremyDibbMusic, she was commissioned by Choir and Organ Magazine to compose a choral work for their New Music Series, and one of her works featured in a 2011 edition of Organists' Review Magazine. Her carol Sleep, my dreaming one is included on the Naxos disc Sleep, Holy Babe (November 2011, "5 Stars" Mail on Sunday, "Christmas CD of the Year" Classic FM, New CD Show).
As well as original compositions, Hilary also works as an arranger; a number of her arrangements feature on a CD of Christmas carols released by Union Square Music, and her arrangement of the National Anthem was performed on ITV1 and at the Wimbledon New Theatre for the Prince of Wales’ 60th birthday. Her arrangements of hymn tunes are broadcast on Radio 4, and she was commissioned to write the music for adverts for HBO, Sky and 3 Mobile. Additionally, she arranges pop and jazz hits for Blossom Street. Should you wish to commission Hilary for either a new work or an arrangement, please get in touch using the contact form. Some of her arrangements may be found here.
"Hilary Campbell offers welcome contrast in her tranquil Ave Maria, which is beautifully laid out for six voices." John Quinn, Music Web International
"Hilary Campbell’s setting of 'Blow the Wind Southerly' drags the old ditty two generations away from Ferrier’s hand-crafted, perilous simplicities
to an era of faceless industrial fishing" Norman Lebrecht
